General Updates

Bank Holidays: No Training

Our classes continue as normal throughout all school holidays, except Bank Holidays and the two weeks we have off at Christmas. Due to this, please note that there are no classes on Monday the 26th of August.

If you would normally attend on the Bank Holiday you’re always welcome to make up the class by attending an alternative class before or after that date. If you would like to do this please check out the Timetable page on our website for details of our other classes.

Partnering with ArtMartial Clothing

We are enjoying partnering with ArtMartial for all our hoodies and non-training gear, and have now created a new shop interface so it’s now easier to find what you’re looking for. If you need some new casual wear, now’s the time to check it out here.

Parking at Hills Road

Hill’s Road has started putting their gate across the college car-park (opposite the entrance to the Centre car park). Whilst our members are allowed to use the car park, we aren’t allowed to give the code out to everyone en masse so if you need the code drop us an email or ask at Hill’s Road Reception.

Contacting Us/Live Chat

When we created FuTube back during the lockdown period we included a ‘Live Chat’ feature to enable us to fix any teething problems in real time. As time has moved on and FuTube is no-longer in the ‘being built’ stage we are discontinuing the Live Chat feature.

The best way to get in contact with us is by dropping us an email at email@cambridgekungfu.com, as this is monitored by several members of the team. If you prefer to speak to us in person you can call us on 01223 410555 and leave a message and we will ring you back as soon as someone is available, or you can chat to us after your class if there’s time/it’s appropriate.

We do keep an eye on our social media, however we will not see messages on here as quickly as we will see emails.

If in doubt, email us and we’ll get back to you asap.

Kids Kung Fu

Grading Weeks

This terms Grading dates for Little Dragons and Junior Warriors:

Monday 25th November – Saturday 7th December inclusive

Please note the Tiny Tigers do not grade.

Your child should attend as normal during the Grading Week as grading takes place within their regular class. Grading is always optional, if your child hasn’t been attending class regularly, please ensure they feel under no pressure to grade. However, if they are keen to grade then FuTube has all the resources they need in order to do some extra practise and preparation at home.

If this is your child’s first Grading their instructor will talk them through what will happen during the classes leading up to grading. Please bear in mind that if your child is a Dragon or Warrior and decides not to Grade they will get a certificate but they will not get a badge. If you will be away for your grading classes then please get in touch about organising an alternative class to grade in if you wish to grade.

Ceremony Week

The week commencing Monday 9th December will be Ceremony Week. Ceremony Week is a “watching week” where you are invited to come into your child’s regular class to watch them perform their Form, receive their certificate and play some Kung Fu games. We look forward to seeing you there and you are very welcome to bring and family or friends who may like to watch.

The week after Ceremony Week (the week commencing Monday 16th December) will be Games Week and the last week of term. In Games Week the children celebrate the hard work they have shown over the term by playing Kung Fu games. Our last classes of 2024 will be held on Saturday 21st December as we will be closed from Sunday 22nd December – Sunday 5th January for the Christmas Holidays. Please note that our pricing structure takes this into account and your Direct Debit for December will continue as normal. The new term (New Year 2025) will start on Monday 5th January.

Hill's Road Policies

It is the Hill’s Road Sports and Tennis Centre policy that children under the age of 12 must not be left unattended at the Centre. Please make sure that you pick up and drop off your child at class if they are under this age.

Although we do our best to ensure that our classes aren’t ever cancelled at short notice, there may be extenuating circumstances where this could happen, ensuring you directly drop off your child ensures that they won’t be left unsupervised at the Centre if there is a last minute class cancellation. If you have any questions about this just get in touch.

November YEC Workshop with Grandmaster Steve Tappin

On Saturday 9th November Sifu Col’s teachers, Grandmaster Steve Tappin and Master Wayne Tappin, will be coming to Cambridge to do a Youth Escrima Concepts workshop and to see all the students who are approaching Grade 8 and 12. Steve is the head of the Escrima Concepts system and, along with his son Wayne, travels the world teaching a large variety of clubs and organisations.

Here at Cambridge Kung Fu we have developed the first Youth programme for Escrima Concepts in the UK, and Steve would like to see all students going for their Grade 8 and 12 before they finish their grading.

The workshop is open to YEC students of all levels, however those going for Grade 8 and 12 will need to attend this event or the next one in 2025 before they are able to fully complete the grade. If your child is going for Grade 8 or 12 and is unable to attend please get in touch with us.

When: Saturday 9th November, 10.30am-12.30pm
Where: Hills Road Sports and Tennis Centre
Price: £25

Youth Kung Fu and Youth Escrima Grading and Games Week

This term’s Youth Kung Fu and Youth Escrima grading will be taking place from Monday 2nd December through to Saturday 14th December inclusive.

Unless we contact you otherwise, your child should attend as normal during the Grading Week as Grading takes place within their regular class.

However, if they are keen to grade then FuTube has all the resources they need in order to do some extra practise and preparation at home. Students going for Revision Grades (Grades 4, 8 and 12) can attend as many grading sessions as they would like during this period.

If you will be away for your grading classes then please get in touch about organising an alternative.

The week commencing Monday 16th December will be a Games Week and the last week of term for the students where we reward their hard work across the term by playing Kung Fu games. Our last classes of 2024 will be held on Saturday 21st December as we will be closed from Sunday 22nd December – Sunday 5th January for the Christmas Holidays. Wing Chun

New Term Structure

The way our terms are organised has been the same for around 10 years now, however how we teach and how members attend class throughout the year has changed. Over the past year Ross and I have been discussing the next evolution of the termly teaching structure, and from January we will be going ahead with this new version.

The syllabus itself is not changing. There are still three rotations for each level (Beginner, Intermediate, and Senior).
What’s changing is how the terms interact with the school summer holidays.

Beginner Syllabus:
There will be three Beginner Gradings a year, one at the end of each syllabus term. Syllabus terms will start in January, April, and September. Over the 6 week school Summer Holidays we won’t be working on grading material, instead we will focus on developing general Wing Chun skills including padwork, sparring drills, foot work, form applications, (non-syllabus) self defence and more. This means that you can dip in and out over the summer to fit in with holidays. Those going for Grade 4 (the revision grade) will still have the chance to do some Grading in September if they wish.

Intermediate/Senior Syllabus:
There will still be 3 Intermediate/Senior Gradings a year, one for each syllabus rotation (starting in January, May, and September). Over the 6 week school Summer Holidays we will focus on revision combined with general Wing Chun skills meaning that you can dip in and out over the summer to fit in with holidays.

Extra: Over the summer holidays all members are allowed to attend as many classes as they can each week, without an increase in payment. So if you’ve got more time on your hands, come along and do lots of extra training at no extra cost.

Catch Up Classes

We currently ask you to let us know when you’re doing a catch up class on a different day to your normal class. Starting in June, we are trialling a new system whereby you do not need to let us know; you can just turn up. We’re hoping this makes the process of catching up on missed classes easier for everyone.

This will apply to all our adults classes. Kids and Youth will keep the old system of registering your catch up with us due to a different numbers cap for kids and under 18s.

Friday 8th November: Stand Up Grappling with Steve Tappin

Grandmaster Steve Tappin (head of the Escrima Concepts system we teach) has agreed to do a Stand Up grappling session for us on Friday 8th November. This was one of the arts that he studied from a young age and went into the development of the EC system. Back in 2019 Steve did a session on Ground and Stand Up grappling and you can see some photos from it <link-“https://www.facebook.com/share/eeP94PVEQ9DnTU8c/”>here</link>, however this time will will focus on Stand Up only.

If you enjoyed the Controls part of the Senior Wing Chun syllabus, or haven’t got there yet but like the idea, come along as it’s open to all CKF members. If you have any questions about this please get in touch.

There are limited spaces for this session, so please sign up asap if you’d like to come. Open to all CKF members.

The price of Grading is as follows…
Normal Grades (1-3, 5-7, 9-11) – £25

Saturday 14th December - Christmas Club Social

End of year drinks for members of all our adults programmes. We’ve booked a large table in the back part of the Devonshire Arms, and will be there from 1pm till 5pm(ish). They do nice drinks and good food, so come along and find out what your training partners look like in normal clothes, meet like-minded people from other classes, and maybe even chat about things that aren’t martial arts related.

Everyone welcome.

Christmas Holidays and January Start Date

Our last Wing Chun class of 2024 will be held on Saturday 21st December as we will then be closed for the Christmas Holidays. Please note that our pricing structure takes this into account and your Direct Debit for December will continue as normal.

Sunday 19th January 2025 - Free Self Defence Workshop

Every January we organise a free Self Defence Workshop for our members, parents of members, and friends of Cambridge Kung Fu (for ages 16+).

At Cambridge Kung Fu we feel that it is very important for people of all ages to have a working knowledge of Self Defence and the options available to them if a Self Defence situation should occur. Our Kids, Youth, and Adults classes are all geared towards helping members achieve this. However for parents and friends who do not train with us regularly, it can be a daunting subject, and one easily ignored until it’s too late.

This year Col will be holding a free Self Defence workshop aimed at teaching the fundamental concepts needed to help you deal with some of the more unpleasant situations life may bring. Our aim is for attendees to leave the session feeling that they have more options should something happen, the confidence to take the action it requires to protect themselves or others, and an understanding of the UK law on Self Defence.

Adult and 16+ YKF/YEC students are also very welcome to attend, as this workshop will complement your regular training.

When: Sunday 19th January 2025, 11am-2pm
Venue: 28th Scout Hut
Cost: Free

Please spread the word to anyone you feel may benefit from the workshop, and use this form to reserve your place.

October/November - Escrima Concepts Membership

The yearly membership for Escrima Concepts (the organisation headed by Grandmaster Steve Tappin) has just been updated for the first time in 10 years. This membership allows you to grade with Steve and Wayne, as well as attend and be recognised in seminars and clubs throughout the Escrima Concepts organisation. It also includes your insurance cover to train in all non-CKF events in the UK and Europe, and comes with a nifty little membership booklet you should keep with you whenever you train outside of Cambridge. (If you haven’t received yours yet, let me know).

To make things easy for members, as well as ourselves, we will add the £20 membership fee to your monthly Direct Debit in October/November of each year for all current EC members. You will receive an email before this happens each year to let you know that your monthly payment will be different for this one month.

If you have any questions about the membership, how the payment works, or do not have your membership booklet please get in touch.

Friday 8th November - Sunday 10th November: Seminar and Grading Weekend with Grandmaster Steve and Master Wayne

This was one of the arts that Steve studied from a young age and went into the development of the EC system. Like swords he doesn’t usually teach it anymore, so we’re very lucky that he has agreed. Back in 2019 Steve did a session on Ground and Stand Up grappling and you can see some photos from it <link-“https://www.facebook.com/share/eeP94PVEQ9DnTU8c/”>here</link>, however this time will will focus on Stand Up only.
