General Updates

Christmas Closure: No Training

Our classes continue as normal throughout all school holidays, except Bank Holidays and the two weeks we have off at Christmas. Due to this, please note that there are no classes Sunday 21st December – Sunday 4th January. Classes will resume as normal from Monday 5th January.

Partnering with ArtMartial Clothing

We are enjoying partnering with ArtMartial for all our hoodies and non-training gear, and have now created a new shop interface so it’s now easier to find what you’re looking for. If you need some new casual wear, now’s the time to check it out here.

Parking at Hills Road

Hill’s Road has started putting their gate across the college car-park (opposite the entrance to the Centre car park). Whilst our members are allowed to use the car park, we aren’t allowed to give the code out to everyone en masse so if you need the code drop us an email or ask at Hill’s Road Reception.

Contacting Us/Live Chat

When we created FuTube back during the lockdown period we included a ‘Live Chat’ feature to enable us to fix any teething problems in real time. As time has moved on and FuTube is no-longer in the ‘being built’ stage we are discontinuing the Live Chat feature.

The best way to get in contact with us is by dropping us an email at email@cambridgekungfu.com, as this is monitored by several members of the team. If you prefer to speak to us in person you can call us on 01223 410555 and leave a message and we will ring you back as soon as someone is available, or you can chat to us after your class if there’s time/it’s appropriate.

We do keep an eye on our social media, however we will not see messages on here as quickly as we will see emails.

If in doubt, email us and we’ll get back to you asap.

Kids Kung Fu

Price Increase

We would like to remind you that from May 2025 we will be increasing our prices for Kids and Youth classes to £43 a month for one class a week (a £1 a month increase) and moving forwards we will be automatically increasing our prices by £1 each year in May. We will do this automatically via your Direct Debit, and so there is no action that you need to take. We always consider price changes carefully; however, rising venue and staff costs over the past few years have necessitated these updates.

Autumn Term Syllabus

On Monday 1st September we kick off the new term which runs until Saturday 20th December.

From Monday 8th September you will be able to access the syllabus videos on FuTube which you can use to help consolidate your child’s practice at home:

Tiny Tigers
Little Dragons
Junior Warriors

If you need help accessing FuTube just get in touch!

Grading Weeks

This terms Grading dates for Little Dragons and Junior Warriors are:

Monday 24th November – Saturday 6th December inclusive

Please note the Tiny Tigers do not grade.

Your child should attend as normal during the Grading Week as grading takes place within their regular class. Grading is always optional, for example if your child hasn’t been attending class regularly please ensure they feel under no pressure to grade. However, if they are keen to grade then FuTube will have all the resources they need in order to do some extra practise and preparation outside of class.

If this is your child’s first Grading their instructor will talk them through what will happen during the classes leading up to grading. Please bear in mind that if your child is a Dragon or Warrior and decides not to Grade they will get a certificate but they will not get a badge. If you will be away for your grading classes then please get in touch about organising an alternative class to grade in if they wish to grade.

Ceremony and Games Week

The week commencing Monday 8th December will be Ceremony Week. Ceremony Week is a “watching week” where you are invited to come into your child’s regular class to watch them perform their Form, receive their certificate and play some Kung Fu games. We look forward to seeing you there and you are very welcome to bring family or friends who may like to watch.

The week after Ceremony Week (the week commencing Monday 15th December) will be Games Week where the children celebrate the hard work they have shown over the term by playing Kung Fu games. We are then closed for two weeks for Christmas and return on Monday 5th January. Please note that our pricing structure takes this into account and your Direct Debit for December will continue as normal.

Half Term

We continue classes with our regular timetable through the October half-term holiday. If you are away you are welcome to book in a catch up class for another day by dropping us an email. If you would like to do this please check out the Timetable page on our website and work out which class or classes would be best for you to attend, then contact us at email@cambridgekungfu.com so that we can ensure there is space in the class(es) and that our Instructor Team knows you’re coming.

Housekeeping

Please keep us up to date with anything that might affect your child’s training (e.g. medical issues that we should be aware of).

Please also ensure that your children have neat finger (and toe) nails and that they remove any watches or jewellery (e.g. earrings) before classes to avoid injuring others and themselves, or damaging equipment. We train in bare feet, however if your child prefers they can wear “grippy” socks. If your child has any type of foot infection (e.g. a verruca) please can you send them in class with “grippy” socks as opposed to bare feet.

Feedback: We are always interested in getting your feedback, finding out what you think about our classes and if there’s anything we can do to make them better. As well as emailing us anytime, you can also use this form to give us feedback anonymously if you prefer.

Hill's Road Policies

It is the Hill’s Road Sports and Tennis Centre policy that children under the age of 12 must not be left unattended at the Centre. Please make sure that you pick up and drop off your child at class if they are under this age.

Although we do our best to ensure that our classes aren’t ever cancelled at short notice, there may be extenuating circumstances where this could happen, ensuring you directly drop off your child ensures that they won’t be left unsupervised at the Centre if there is a last minute class cancellation. If you have any questions about this just get in touch.

Wing Chun

Housekeeping - Emergency Medication, Injuries, Parking and Feedback

Emergency Medication

  • If you bring medication with you to class that the instructors may need to administer (e.g. epi-pens) please make sure that we are aware of this and leave your bag next to the instructor area so we can access it easily.

Injuries

  • Please keep us and your training partners informed regarding any injuries or anything else that may affect your training, and let us know if you should not participate in any activity. If you feel that an exercise is beyond your current ability, stop and let an instructor know.
  • Ensure that you have neat finger (and toe) nails and that you remove any watches or jewellery before classes to avoid injuring others and yourself, or damaging our pads and practice mitts.

Parking

  • Hill’s Road has started putting their gate across the college car-park (opposite the entrance to the Centre car park). Whilst our members are allowed to use the car park, we aren’t allowed to give the code out to everyone en masse so if you need the code drop us an email or ask at Hill’s Road Reception.
  • At the Scout Hut, we aim to finish the classes with enough time for the carpark to clear before the next class arrives. Please be as efficient as you can when leaving to enable the next class to start on time.

Feedback

We are always interested in getting your feedback, finding out what you think about our classes and if there’s anything we can do to make them better. As well as emailing us anytime, you can also use this form to give us feedback anonymously if you prefer.

Multi Class Deal

With our price structure including a better deal for training more than once a week, we wanted to draw your attention to the Tuesday night (and Thursday afternoon) Escrima Concepts classes. Although a different art to Wing Chun, Escrima is a great complimentary art for anyone wanting to do extra training to include using and defending against weapons. We have quite a few members already training in both arts (ask me in class if you’d like to chat to someone who already does both) and the different types of training can be really beneficial when you get to the higher grades.

Training in two or more adult classes per week, in Wing Chun and/or Escrima, costs only £59 a month, and you get 2 weeks free to give it a go if you decide to try out the class.

You can find our timetable here.

Benefits of increasing your training frequency include faster skill development, improved muscle memory, and greater confidence in applying techniques under pressure. More training also enhances fitness, coordination, and adaptability while deepening your understanding of both Wing Chun and Escrima. Plus, training with a wider range of partners helps you refine your responses and build stronger connections with other members.

Catch Up Classes

We currently ask you to let us know when you’re doing a catch up class on a different day to your normal class. Starting in June, we are trialling a new system whereby you do not need to let us know; you can just turn up. We’re hoping this makes the process of catching up on missed classes easier for everyone.

This will apply to all our adults classes. Kids and Youth will keep the old system of registering your catch up with us due to a different numbers cap for kids and under 18s.

Monday 1st December - Grading

If you have any questions about this please get in touch.

Sunday 18th January 2026 - Free Self Defence Workshop

Every January we organise a free Self Defence Workshop for our members, parents of members, and friends of Cambridge Kung Fu (for ages 16+).

At Cambridge Kung Fu we feel that it is very important for people of all ages to have a working knowledge of Self Defence and the options available to them if a Self Defence situation should occur. Our Kids, Youth, and Adults classes are all geared towards helping members achieve this. However for parents and friends who do not train with us regularly, it can be a daunting subject, and one easily ignored until it’s too late.

This year Col will be holding a free Self Defence workshop aimed at teaching the fundamental concepts needed to help you deal with some of the more unpleasant situations life may bring. Our aim is for attendees to leave the session feeling that they have more options should something happen, the confidence to take the action it requires to protect themselves or others, and an understanding of the UK law on Self Defence.

Adult and 16+ YKF/YEC students are also very welcome to attend, as this workshop will complement your regular training.

When: Sunday 18th January 2025, 11am-2pm
Venue: 28th Scout Hut
Cost: Free

Please spread the word to anyone you feel may benefit from the workshop, and use this form to reserve your place.

Sunday 18th January - Instructor Training

We will be running an Instructor Training session in the afternoon following on from the Free Self Defence Workshop on Sunday 18th January. This is open to all Senior Wing Chun and Escrima members (those who have passed WC SG8 or EC SG6), you do not have to be currently assisting/teaching in a class.

This session will be about how to teach, with each member having a go at leading an exercise of their choice and then getting feedback from the group. We will also be doing some cross training between the two arts, to deepen your understanding of the connections between them both.

If you are planning to attend, or are interested in attending but are not sure, please get in touch and let me know.

When: Sunday 18th January 2025, 3pm-6pm
Venue: 28th Scout Hut.
