General Updates

Bank Holidays: No Training

Our classes continue as normal throughout all school holidays, except Bank Holidays and the two weeks we have off at Christmas. Due to this, please note that there are no Bank Holidays this term and classes will continue as per usual during February Half Term.

If you would normally attend on the Bank Holiday you’re always welcome to make up the class by attending an alternative class before or after that date. If you would like to do this please check out the Timetable page on our website for details of our other classes.

Partnering with ArtMartial Clothing

We are enjoying partnering with ArtMartial for all our hoodies and non-training gear, and have now created a new shop interface so it’s now easier to find what you’re looking for. If you need some new casual wear, now’s the time to check it out here.

Parking at Hills Road

Hill’s Road has started putting their gate across the college car-park (opposite the entrance to the Centre car park). Whilst our members are allowed to use the car park, we aren’t allowed to give the code out to everyone en masse so if you need the code drop us an email or ask at Hill’s Road Reception.

Kids Kung Fu

New Term Syllabus and FuTube

This week we kick off the first term of the year which runs from Tuesday 2nd January to Saturday 30th March inclusive.

From Monday 8th January you will be able to access the syllabus videos on FuTube which you can use to help consolidate your child’s practice at home:

Tiny Tigers
Little Dragons
Junior Warriors

If you need help accessing FuTube just get in touch!

Grading Weeks - Term 1

This term’s Grading dates for Little Dragons and Junior Warriors are:

Monday 4th March – Saturday 16th March inclusive

Please note the Tiny Tigers do not grade.

Your child should attend as normal during the Grading Week as grading takes place within their regular class. Grading is always optional, so if your child hasn’t been attending class regularly please ensure they feel under no pressure to grade. If they are keen to grade, however, then FuTube has all the resources they need in order to do some extra practice and preparation at home.

If this is your child’s first Grading, their instructor will talk them through what will happen in the classes leading up to it. Please bear in mind that if your child is a Dragon or Warriors and decides not to Grade they will get a certificate but they will not get a badge. If you will be away for your grading classes then please get in touch in advance about organising an alternative class to grade in if you wish to grade.

Ceremony Week

The week commencing Monday 18th March will be Ceremony Week. Ceremony Week is a ‘watching week’ where you are invited to come into your child’s regular class to watch them perform their Form, receive their certificate and play some Kung Fu games. We look forward to seeing you there!

The week after Ceremony Week (the week commencing Monday 25th March) will be Games Week and the last week of term. In Games Week the children celebrate the hard work they have shown over the term by playing Kung Fu games. Our classes will then continue through the Easter holidays

Half Term/Easter Holidays

We continue classes through the February half-term holiday and through the Easter Holidays, however we do not have any classes on Bank Holidays. So there won’t be classes on the dates as follows:

Friday 29th March – Good Friday
Monday 1st April – Easter Monday

If you are missing a class due to a Bank Holiday you are very welcome to book in a catch up class for another day by dropping us an email.

Hill's Road Policies

It is the Hill’s Road Sports and Tennis Centre policy that children under the age of 12 must not be left unattended at the Centre. Please make sure that you pick up and drop off your child at class if they are under this age.

Although we do our best to ensure that our classes aren’t ever cancelled at short notice, there may be extenuating circumstances where this could happen, ensuring you directly drop off your child ensures that they won’t be left unsupervised at the Centre if there is a last minute class cancellation. If you have any questions about this just get in touch.

Youth Kung Fu & Youth Escrima

New Term Syllabus and FuTube

Youth Kung Fu:
As well as a form component for each grade, this term our Beginner Youth Kung Fu students are working on Kicks, the Intermediate students are practising Close Range Strikes, and the Senior Students are working on Weapons Awareness. You can access online content which helps support your child’s progress in these programmes via FuTube. Just get in touch if you need any help navigating the site.

Once students reach age 13 they are invited to try out the Youth Escrima Concepts class for the opportunity to start learning our weapons programme as well. If your child is now 13 and interested in trying out the class please let us know. It takes place on Monday nights, 7pm-7.50pm at Hills Road, and you can find more information here.

Youth Escrima Concepts:
New students this term will be working on Rotation 2: Outside Defences (Single Stick and Unarmed), with all other grades focussing on their specific syllabus which you can see here.

This term’s Youth Escrima Gradings will be taking place on Monday the 25th of March.

The week after Grading (the week commencing Monday 25th March) will be Games Week and the last week of term. In Games Week the children celebrate the hard work they have shown over the term by playing Kung Fu games and receive their certificates if they have Graded. Our classes will then continue through the Easter holidays, see below for more details.

Wing Chun

New Term Structure

The way our terms are organised has been the same for around 10 years now, however how we teach and how members attend class throughout the year has changed. Over the past year Ross and I have been discussing the next evolution of the termly teaching structure, and from January we will be going ahead with this new version.

The syllabus itself is not changing. There are still three rotations for each level (Beginner, Intermediate, and Senior).
What’s changing is how the terms interact with the school summer holidays.

Beginner Syllabus:
There will be three Beginner Gradings a year, one at the end of each syllabus term. Syllabus terms will start in January, April, and September. Over the 6 week school Summer Holidays we won’t be working on grading material, instead we will focus on developing general Wing Chun skills including padwork, sparring drills, foot work, form applications, (non-syllabus) self defence and more. This means that you can dip in and out over the summer to fit in with holidays. Those going for Grade 4 (the revision grade) will still have the chance to do some Grading in September if they wish.

Intermediate/Senior Syllabus:
There will still be 3 Intermediate/Senior Gradings a year, one for each syllabus rotation (starting in January, May, and September). Over the 6 week school Summer Holidays we will focus on revision combined with general Wing Chun skills meaning that you can dip in and out over the summer to fit in with holidays.

Extra: Over the summer holidays all members are allowed to attend as many classes as they can each week, without an increase in payment. So if you’ve got more time on your hands, come along and do lots of extra training at no extra cost.
