General Updates

Bank Holidays: No Training

Our classes continue as normal throughout all school holidays, except Bank Holidays and the two weeks we have off at Christmas. Due to this, please note that there are no classes on Monday the 26th of August.

If you would normally attend on the Bank Holiday you’re always welcome to make up the class by attending an alternative class before or after that date. If you would like to do this please check out the Timetable page on our website for details of our other classes.

Partnering with ArtMartial Clothing

We are enjoying partnering with ArtMartial for all our hoodies and non-training gear, and have now created a new shop interface so it’s now easier to find what you’re looking for. If you need some new casual wear, now’s the time to check it out here.

Parking at Hills Road

Hill’s Road has started putting their gate across the college car-park (opposite the entrance to the Centre car park). Whilst our members are allowed to use the car park, we aren’t allowed to give the code out to everyone en masse so if you need the code drop us an email or ask at Hill’s Road Reception.

Kids Kung Fu

New Term Syllabus and FuTube

This week we kick off the Summer Holiday programme of classes which runs for six weeks (from Monday 22nd July to Saturday 31st August).

Over the Summer Holidays we have a reduced timetable running for the Tiny Tigers, Little Dragons and Junior Warriors so please make sure that you are aware of when the sessions are as the Monday, Wednesday and Friday classes will not be running (you can find our timetable here. Students can attend as many sessions as they would like for their age-group at no extra charge over the summer holidays. You don’t need to book in catch-ups or let us know in advance, just turn up.

We don’t have Grading or a Ceremony over the Summer Holidays and each session will be a stand alone class of Kung Fu practice and games, so it doesn’t matter if you have missed a few weeks. If you have questions about this please just get in touch.

When the Summer Holiday programme of classes ends we go straight into our next term (from Monday 2nd September) when our regular schedule will resume.

Moving Up

From Monday 22nd July, children who are old enough will progress up to the next group up as follows:

Tiny Tigers who have just finished School Year 1 will move up to Little Dragons
Little Dragons who have just finished School Year 3 will move up to Junior Warriors
Junior Warriors who have just finished School Year 6 will move up to our Youth Kung Fu Programme

If you have any questions about moving up, or can’t remember which class your child is moving to please just get in touch. We hope that your children enjoy moving to the next stage!

Hill's Road Policies

It is the Hill’s Road Sports and Tennis Centre policy that children under the age of 12 must not be left unattended at the Centre. Please make sure that you pick up and drop off your child at class if they are under this age.

Although we do our best to ensure that our classes aren’t ever cancelled at short notice, there may be extenuating circumstances where this could happen, ensuring you directly drop off your child ensures that they won’t be left unsupervised at the Centre if there is a last minute class cancellation. If you have any questions about this just get in touch.

Youth Kung Fu & Youth Escrima

Youth Kung Fu New Term Syllabus and FuTube

Over the Summer Holidays (from Monday 22nd July to Saturday 31st August) each week will be a stand alone session of kung fu techniques and games. There will be no Grading at the end of Summer Holidays apart from for the Revision Grades (Grades 4, 8 and 12) where there will be an opportunity to grade in the final week of the Summer Holidays if they feel ready. We are opening up our schedule over the Summer Holidays and students can come to as many classes as they would like for their grade for no extra charge, you don’t need to book in catch-up’s, just turn up.

The aim of the Summer Holidays classes will be to integrate the new students moving up from Junior Warriors and give beginner students (Grades 1-4) an opportunity to consolidate their basics plus get an introduction to the intermediate programme. For Intermediate and Senior students the summer term will be about revision and taking a leadership role in helping the new students get used to the rigours of Youth Kung Fu training. We will aim to do all this whilst having fun!

Students working towards their Revision Grades 4/8/12 will still be allowed to train their grading material and grade at the end of the Summer Holidays if they wish, but this will be optional.

You can access syllabus details and online content via FuTube, which helps support your child’s progress in these programmes, here: Beginner Youth Kung Fu Syllabus, Intermediate Youth Kung Fu Syllabus, Senior Youth Kung Fu Syllabus.

When the Summer Holiday programme of classes ends we go straight into our next term (from Monday 2nd September).

Youth Escrima Concepts New Term Syllabus and FuTube

Once students reach age 13 they are invited to try out the Youth Escrima Concepts class for the opportunity to start learning our weapons programme as well. If your child is now 13 and interested in trying out the class please let us know. It takes place on Monday nights, 7pm-7.50pm, at Hills Road.

As we have a shorter term over the Summer Holidays (from Monday 22nd July – Saturday 31st August), and with many students taking time off for the holidays, we will not be grading over the Summer Holidays classes. Instead we will focus on training some fundamental Escrima skills mixed in with some fun games (similar to our Junior Warriors games). This relieves the stress of having to grade if students haven’t attended every lesson, and enables us to mix all the different levels together so they can train with different training partners.

Students working towards their Grade 8 will still be allowed to train their grading material and grade at the end of the term if they wish, but this will be optional.

You can access syllabus details and online content via FuTube, which helps support your child’s progress in these programmes, here: Beginner Youth Escrima Syllabus, Intermediate Youth Escrima Syllabus, Senior Youth Escrima Syllabus.

If you need help accessing FuTube please get in touch!

When the Summer Holiday programme of classes ends we go straight into our next term (from Monday 2nd September).

Bank Holidays

We continue classes through the Summer Holidays holiday, however we do not have any classes on Bank Holidays. So there won’t be classes this term on Monday 26th August.

Revision Grading and Games Week

As mentioned above there will only be grading for students going for the Revision Grades in the Summer Holidays.

Youth Escrima Concepts: Monday 2nd September
Youth Kung Fu: Tuesday 27th August – Saturday 31st August

The Revision Grading for Youth Kung Fu will take place during Games Week, so students who choose to take their Revision Grade will do so instead of playing games with the rest of the class. Youth Kung Fu Students are welcome to attend as many grading sessions as they are able throughout the week, although priority will be given to those who regularly attend that class. This is a general guideline for Youth Kung Fu Revision Grades all year round.

YEC Workshop with Grandmaster Steve Tappin - 18th May

On Saturday 18th May Sifu Col’s teachers, Grandmaster Steve Tappin and Master Wayne Tappin, will be coming to Cambridge to do a YEC workshop and to see all the students who are approaching Grade 8 and 12. Steve is the head of the Escrima Concepts system and, along with his son Wayne, travels the world teaching a large variety of clubs and organisations.

Here at Cambridge Kung Fu we have developed the first Youth programme for Escrima Concepts in the UK, and Steve would like to see all students going for their Grade 8 and 12 before they finish their grading.

The workshop is open to YEC students of all levels, however those going for Grade 8 and 12 will need to attend this event or the next one in November before they are able to fully complete the grade. If your child is going for Grade 8 or 12 and is unable to attend please get in touch with us.

When: Saturday 18th May, 10.30am-12.30pm
Where: Hills Road Sports and Tennis Centre
Price: £25

Wing Chun

New Term Structure

The way our terms are organised has been the same for around 10 years now, however how we teach and how members attend class throughout the year has changed. Over the past year Ross and I have been discussing the next evolution of the termly teaching structure, and from January we will be going ahead with this new version.

The syllabus itself is not changing. There are still three rotations for each level (Beginner, Intermediate, and Senior).
What’s changing is how the terms interact with the school summer holidays.

Beginner Syllabus:
There will be three Beginner Gradings a year, one at the end of each syllabus term. Syllabus terms will start in January, April, and September. Over the 6 week school Summer Holidays we won’t be working on grading material, instead we will focus on developing general Wing Chun skills including padwork, sparring drills, foot work, form applications, (non-syllabus) self defence and more. This means that you can dip in and out over the summer to fit in with holidays. Those going for Grade 4 (the revision grade) will still have the chance to do some Grading in September if they wish.

Intermediate/Senior Syllabus:
There will still be 3 Intermediate/Senior Gradings a year, one for each syllabus rotation (starting in January, May, and September). Over the 6 week school Summer Holidays we will focus on revision combined with general Wing Chun skills meaning that you can dip in and out over the summer to fit in with holidays.

Extra: Over the summer holidays all members are allowed to attend as many classes as they can each week, without an increase in payment. So if you’ve got more time on your hands, come along and do lots of extra training at no extra cost.

Catch Up Classes

We currently ask you to let us know when you’re doing a catch up class on a different day to your normal class. Starting in June, we are trialling a new system whereby you do not need to let us know; you can just turn up. We’re hoping this makes the process of catching up on missed classes easier for everyone.

This will apply to all our adults classes. Kids and Youth will keep the old system of registering your catch up with us due to a different numbers cap for kids and under 18s.

22nd July - 31st August - Summer Holidays Plan and Saturday Class Time Change

Our classes continue throughout the Summer Holidays, with the small change of our Saturday morning class moving to an 11am start as of 27th July.

Please note that Monday 26th August is a Bank Holiday and so there will be no classes on this date.

As lots of people go away over the summer and the classes get quieter, we’ve decided to invite all adult members to attend as many adult classes as they would like, for no extra charge. This applies to all grade appropriate Wing Chun and Escrima classes (see timetable here).

We understand that most people will take around 6 weeks of holiday per year (4 weeks holiday plus the 2 weeks we are closed for Christmas) and this is taken into account within our monthly prices, so if you’re going to be away over the summer you don’t need to do anything.

Monday 2nd September: SG4, Intermediate and Senior Gradings

Starts Monday 2nd September

Week 1: Monday 2nd September – Saturday 7th September (inclusive).

Gradings will take place during your normal lessons. If you are not grading this time around you will be able to train, as normal, during the class. Those going for Revision Grades would aim to attend as many sessions as possible in this week.

Please use this form to sign up for Week 1 grading.

Please use this form to sign up for Week 2 grading.

The price of Grading is as follows…
Normal Grades (1-3, 5-7, 9-11) – £25

Once you have graded this will be added to your monthly payment.

If you are unsure what you need to know to grade, check out the details on FuTube:
